Fierce Weather Marks a Shift in the Seasons in New England

A MONARCH BUTTERFLY ENJOYS SOME NECTAR ON ONE OF THE HELIOTROPE STANDARDS.
Much of the eastern US experienced fierce weather yesterday, as a cold front and a stronger than usual storm system kept many of us under the threat of tornados, hail and severe thunderstorms. Thankfully, we only suffered from some minor flooding and wind after a full day of threatening clouds and warnings.  I was prepared for either no glass on the greenhouse today, or at the very least, torn foliage from hail, but we awoke to bright sunshine and cool, dry breezes – and for early September, we experienced what felt and looked like, a very ‘spring’ day.

WHEN THE SUN CAME OUT TODAY, IT FELT BRIGHTER THAN USUAL, EVEN THOUGH WE KNOW THAT THE  DAYS ARE GRADUALLY BECOMING SHORTER.

THE PURPLE IOCHROMA CYANUM GROWING IN A POT, SEEMED EXCEPTIONALLY BRILLIANT TODAY AFTER THE STORMS. IT WON’T BE LONG BEFORE I WILL NEED TO RELOCATE THIS TROPICAL BACK INTO THE GREENHOUSE.

TODAY, ALL OF THE JAPANESE MORNING GLORIES WERE BLOOMING. THIS ONE HAD A SHIMMER EFFECT IN THE CELL STRUCTURE OF THE FLOWER, NOT UNLIKE NERINE SARNIENSIS – IT SPARKLED LIKE GLITTER OR DIAMOND DUST.

I LOVE SURPRISES. I FORGOT THAT I HAD MOVED SOME AGAPANTHUS OUT BACK AROUND THE GOLDFISH POND. TODAY, I NOTICED THAT THIS ONE WAS BLOOMING. A FALL BLOOMER, THIS IS THE WILD FORM OF THE RARELY SEEN SPECIES- AGAPANTHUS INAPERTUS, AN AGAPANTHUS WITH PENDANT FLOWERS NATIVE TO SOUTH AFRICA.

HERE IS WHAT’S BEEN ATTRACTING ALL OF OUR HUMMINGBIRDS THIS YEAR. IT’S BUDDLEA LINDLEYANA – THE WEEPING BUTTERFLY BUSH, A RARELY SEEN SPECIES THAT COMES FROM CHINA. FOR US, IT FORMS THESE 2 FOOT LONG PANICLES THAT HANG.

DILL BLOSSOMS IN THE VEGETABLE GARDEN.

BEGONIA’S LOOK BEST IN SEPTEMBER, THIS SPECIES IS NEW FOR US,  B. MOYESII. I LOVE THE WRINKLED FOLIAGE WITH A PATTERN NOT UNILKE A SPIDER WEB.

THE GOURDS ARE STARTING TO COLOR-UP AND MATURE

NOW THAT IT HAS BLOOMED, THE MANGAVE ‘BLOODSPOT’ HAS BLOSSOMS THAT HINT TO THE AGAVE’s RELATIONSHIP TO TUBEROSES. THIS STALK HAS BEEN DRIVING THE YELLOW JACKETS CRAZY.
