I am thrilled to report that as the fall-blooming southern hemispheric bulbs begin to emerge as the nights become cooler and the autumn rains have arrive, my Brunsvigia bosmaniae bulb has decided to bloom once again. This impressive scape will be in bloom in a few weeks, and although it will not be as impressive as a dry sandy river bed in South Africa with hundreds of the highly rare flower in bloom, ( see here ) it still will have bulb fanatics calling me to come visit it for the few days that it is in bloom.
More to come – router down for a week, so I am just catching up – for now, off to work!
Brunsvigia is very cool indeed: I have not been privileged to see the spectacle of thousands in the Karoo, but they grow high in the Drakensberg where I have seen both pink and red species exploding like fireworks in our midwinter (their summer)…When will we have hardy ones available to grace our gardens outdoors? That would be boss indeed! (Wish I were near to see it in full glory).
I have to admit that I’m one of those bulb fanatics and I’ve become that after years of gardening with all kinds of plants. Some have failed me or maybe I failed them but I never seem to go wrong with bulbs.
So, for the past several years, my garden is filled with a wide variety of bulbs which product their gorgeous blooms at different times of the year. And Brunsvigia bosmaniaes are among my favorites.
I also grow the same species of Brunsvigia. Mine is 6 or 7 years old. I have 3 bulbs. Can't wait for it to bloom. Love ur blog BTW and have been following it for some time. Will be travelling to South Africa's Eastern Cape in January 2012 where I hope to see these otherworldly bulbs. Cheers Erika
