THE LOST CRAFT –
RAISING & TRAINING EXHIBITION CHRYSANTHEMUMS

PART ONE OF A TWO PART SERIES – WITH A WORKSHOP PLANNED FOR THE SPRING

PRESENTED BY

Tower Hill Botanic Garden

Boylston, MA

Learn everything you need to know about fine craft of raising ,training and displaying fancy exhibition Chrysanthemums in this presentation by plantsman and blogger Matt Mattus. With cultural techniques which date back to 15th century, the chrysanthemum had remained popular until the mid 20th century, when the economics and interest in keeping such a collection, waned. Today, few take the time and effort to keep or train a collection.
Learn about rare and fancy varieties (spiders, recurves and brush types) as well as their training methods (columns shields, arches, cascades) are rarely seen outside of the handful of specialist collectors and botanic garden who continue to raise and display these flowers. Fewer than 5 institutions raise full exhibition mums today in North America, and only a handful of private collectors continue to keep a collection. This will be a rare opportunity to learn about this fascinating, and at-risk art.
Inspired but this deep tradition, plantsman and garden writer Matt Mattus has dedicated much of his current research in learning as much as he can about the culture and history of these flowers.
We’ve been able to convince Matt to share with us his not only his tips and tricks, but also some of his amazing photographs outlining step-by-step, every thing that you will need to know so that you might try to raise these amazing plants yourself. Matt will be bringing actual specimens as well to share with the audience.
Contact Tower Hill Botanic Garden for reservations.

Beyond Paperwhites

Amazing Winter Blooming Bulbs
for Pots and Greenhouses

Many gardeners think about bulbs as spring-blooming, such as tulips, crocuses and daffodils. But here in New England winters are long, and although we are familiar with some winter bulbs such as amaryllis and paperwhites, most gardeners are ready for something new and unusual. Winter-blooming bulbs are the answer. Bulbs are designed to be practically foolproof, but where can you find unusual ones, and which ones should you try indoors or in a cool room? Join Matt Mattus as he shares some of his favorite bulbs for culture in pots, under glass and indoors. Matt will introduce you to all types of bulbs, from South African rarities for collectors to easy-to-grow yet hard-to-find gems, many of which you may have never heard of. Participants will take home a pot or two of some of Matt’s favorites.

Matt grows his collections in his cold glasshouse in central Massachusetts where he keeps extensive collections of many South African bulbs and plants which grow on much the same cycle as many South African succulents and other geophytes.

RE-DISCOVERING SUMMER BULBS

Join horticulturist Matt Mattus as he shares his designs, ideas and inspirations for adding lesser-used summer bulbs to your gardens and container plantings. Learn about creative and unique ways to grow such delights as galtonia and old-fashioned tuberoses, as well as how to grow and display the sort of conservatory collections once seen only on private estates, with pots of seasonal bulbs like tuberous begonias and unusual Japanese bulbous orchids. Matt’s presentations are always entertaining and beautiful with his stylish photos and lists of sources so you can re-create these looks at your own home.

Matt Mattus is editor and publisher of Plant Society Magazine and the popular rare plant blog Growing With Plants. He is a member of numerous plant societies and is a wizard with all things horticultural.
