Pelargonium gibbosum, an evening fragrant species of Pelargonium (Geranium) from South Africa seems virtually boring when compared to other species and other hybids which are in bloom now in the greenhouse. Tis, the Geranium (Pelargonium) season.

The heirloom variety from 1910, Pelargonium ‘Lord Bute’ is almost black.
A collection of species and hybrid Pelargoniums blooms both in the greenhouse, and our on the display steps on my deck. May and June marks the peak season for bloom, with these South African jewels, and although you might think that the classic red geranium is boring and common, the truth is that the genus has many, many, many hybrids, species and oddities that makes the genus highly collectable.

What beauties.
Beautiful pictures. I am a scented geranium fan, and am just getting them back into the garden after their long winter stay inside. I'm not too good at over wintering them, but do keep them alive so they can flourish again the next year in the garden or take cuttings that easily start into new plants. I think the small, delicate flowers are so interesting and marvel at the difference in form, size, color and scent of all the different pelargoniums. So much fun!
Geranium flowers are always mysterious, with sophisticated colors and shapes and in your pictures are so beautiful…
Didn't know there is so much variation in the pelargonium family. I have the plain old (granny) red pelargonium 🙂
